Following the devastating impact of Hurricane Dorian, the most intense tropical cyclone on record to strike the Bahamas, the urgent need for rapid and cost-effective healthcare infrastructure became clear. Americares, recognizing this need, reached out to Clinic In A Can (CIAC) to provide an immediate solution. In collaboration with Americares, CIAC developed a four-clinic community health center. This center utilized four split 20-foot containers, resulting in eight rooms along with a lobby/waiting area in the covered central space. Transporting the containers to the small island and getting them onsite presented significant logistical hurdles. However, once these challenges were overcome, the CIAC team was prepared and waiting to install the clinics on the pre-poured concrete foundation.
The CIAC team worked diligently and efficiently to set up the community health center. Within two weeks, the island had a new medical facility powered by a solar power, ensuring reliable and sustainable energy. The new clinic provided a safe and equipped environment for medical practice, addressing the immediate healthcare needs of the island's residents following the hurricane's destruction.
By collaborating with Americares, CIAC was able to deliver a functional and sustainable healthcare solution in record time, significantly contributing to the recovery efforts on the island. The community health center not only provided immediate relief but also demonstrated the resilience and adaptability of containerized clinics in delivering essential healthcare services under challenging conditions.
